In Ghana, making a million dollars legally is difficult but keeping a million dollars after it has been made and adding several more million dollars to it is even more difficult.
One man who has achieved both feats is Kennedy Agyapong, the famous and well-to-do Member of Parliament for Assin Fosu.
Kennedy Okumpreku Ohene Agyapong is his full name. He turns 52 this June and has money enough to burn.
He has an amount of money so enviable that his political rivals have publicly accused him of being an international drug baron- an allegation that has not been backed with a single shred of evidence and one that Kennedy has always denied.
Kennedy was on the Delay TV show last Saturday and when the host, Delores Frimpong Manso asked if he was worth $10 Million, he laughed, describing the figure as peanuts.
“Ten Million dollars is no money” were his exact words. This does not come as a surprise because when Kennedy commissioned his ultra-modern cold store at Tema recently, the facility was valued at some $6 million.
He is also the Chief Executive of Ken City Media, a company that owns Net 2 Television station, Oman FM, Ash FM and Spice FM. Kennedy owns the Hollywood Shopping Center, the Supercare Group of Companies and has shares in Assin Farms and several other investments.
Speaking on the Delay TV show, Kennedy said he made his first million dollars before age 30 but actually started to make ‘good’ money in 1997 when he helped facilitate travelling arrangements for some 557 persons and charged each of them an amount of $5,000.
On what he considers as the secret of making money, Kennedy said in his view, one could make money through luck, having a savings culture and by being at the right place at the right time.
When asked if God did not have a role to play in making money, Kennedy said God definitely had a role to play and that the God factor in making money was what some people could luck.
Answering a question on whether he would go to heaven when he died, Kennedy paused for a rather long time and said he would go to heaven if going to heaven was determined by good deeds.
NEWS-ONE’s checks revealed that some three years ago, Kennedy had over 40 houses, including mansions, belonging to him. It is not clear how many houses he has currently but persons close to him estimate them to be around 50.
He is married and has just a little over a dozen children.
He has a fleet of expensive cars he badly maintains. His latest cars include a Mercedes Benz X-550, a new Lincoln Navigator and his custom-made Rolls-Royce that has his names and initials embossed on the leather seat covers.
Kennedy said though he had no regrets buying his Rolls-Royce, he was not sure if it was worth it because it has attracted a lot of enmity and envy for him and that he got sad when people looked at him cynically when they saw him cruising in it.
Kennedy disclosed that after completing Adisadel College, he continued to the Fordham University in New York but left school in level 300 because he had a passion to chase money and had never looked back but rather mastered the art of becoming a magnate.
The interview continues on the Delay TV show on TV3 Saturday afternoon.
