Manchester United Tops The World's 50 Most Valuable Sports Teams

Manchester United Tops The World's 50 Most Valuable Sports Teams

Manchester United lost the Premier League title on the last day of the season in heartbreaking fashion, when rival Manchester City scored a last-minute goal to defeat Queens Park Rangers and clinch its first title ever in May. Man City’s win prevented Manchester United from winning a second straight Premier League title–and record 20th overall–disappointing the team’s 659 million fans around the world.
The Red Devils still lay claim to another title, though: The world’s most valuable sports team. Forbes estimates Manchester United is now worth $2.23 billion, 19% more than No. 2 Real Madrid, which is worth $1.88 billion.

Manchester United fans will once again get a chance to own a piece of the iconic club as the Glazer family filed plans this month for an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange. The Glazers took the club private in 2005 in a leveraged buyout worth $1.47 billion. (The team traded on the London Stock Exchange before then.)
Don’t expect to be picking the next manager if you buy shares. The Glazers intend to keep control of the club through a dual-class share structure in which the Glazers’ stock will be worth 10 votes apiece, while investors will get one vote for each of their shares. Dual-class shares are unusual, but a number of high-profile companies, including Facebook, LinkedIn and The New York Times, use them to retain control while they sell ownership stakes to the public. With the offering, the team can reduce its hefty debt load, which stood at $663 million as of March.
Manchester United has a host of lucrative sponsorships in place. Insurer Aon pays $31 million a year to put its name on the team’s jerseys in a deal that runs through 2014. Last year, DHL Express inked a four-year deal with the club worth a reported $62 million to sponsor Manchester United’s practice jerseys. It is the first case of a practice jersey sponsorship deal for soccer in the U.K. Nike manages the team’s merchandise sales and the agreement is worth a minimum of $39 million annually for Manchester United based on overall sales in a deal through 2015.
Soccer clubs hold the top two spots among the world’s most valuable franchises, but it is American football teams that dominate the rest of the top 50. All 32 NFL teams made the cut, led by the Dallas Cowboys, worth $1.85 billion, tied with the New York Yankees for third overall. The Cowboys are the kings of the NFL thanks to their $1.2 billion stadium, which generates more than $100 million annually from premium seating and nearly $60 million from sponsors like AT&T, Bank of America, Ford Motor and PepsiCo.
The future looks even brighter for NFL teams thanks to a new labor agreement, as well as a new round of TV contracts. The league and its players endured a four-month lockout last year, but no regular-season games were lost. The new collective bargaining agreement ensures labor peace for 10 years and gives owners a bigger piece of the pie, as players settled for a salary cap based on 48% of total revenues versus roughly 54% in previous years.
The NFL inked extensions to its TV deals with CBS, ESPN, Fox and NBC last year. The nine-year deals (ESPN is for eight years) start with the 2014 season and are worth $5 billion a year collectively, a 62% bump on the prior contracts. The average NFL team is worth $1.04 billion.
Major League Baseball landed seven teams on the list (same as soccer), led by the Yankees. As Forbes pointed out in a cover story earlier this year, baseball is flush with TV money thanks to a boom among regional sports networks hungry for content. The Yankees’ YES Network, which is 34% owned by the team, is the most profitable RSN in the U.S., generating more than $200 million in operating income last year. The team is also a cash cow, with $330 million in ticket revenue in 2011, including luxury suites. The Red Sox had the next highest gate at $190 million.
Basketball and Formula 1 both placed two teams among the 50 most valuable franchises. The Los Angeles Lakers jumped 13 spots and are now ranked No. 35 with a value of $900 million, up 40% from last year. As with baseball, revenue growth is tied to TV. The Lakers struck a deal with Time Warner Cable beginning with the 2012-13 season valued at an average of $200 million a year, compared to $35 million under their old agreement. Time Warner will show games on two regional sports channels, one in English and one in Spanish. The Lakers have by far the biggest audience on TV, averaging 258,000 households on Fox Sports West last year.

F1 powerhouse Ferrari ranks No. 15 with a value of $1.1 billion, up 3% from last year. Ferrari extended its $52 million-a-year sponsorship deal this year with Spanish bank Santander. This follows Ferrari’s blockbuster extension last year with sponsor Marlboro worth as much as $500 million over three years. McLaren’s value fell 2% this year to $800 million as main backer Vodafone is reviewing its sports sponsorship commitments. McLaren would be hard pressed to replace Vodafone at comparable levels. McLaren also faces the free agency of Lewis Hamilton, who is one of the most marketable drivers in the sport. Hamilton’s contract expires at the end of 2012.

Chelsea win the battle to sign wing wizard Hazard from Lille

The £32 million-rated Lille attacker is understood to have agreed personal terms with the Blues and is likely to sign for the Stamford Bridge club this week.

Manchester United and Manchester City were also given permission to talk to Hazard, but the 21-year-old decided over the weekend to sign for Chelsea, finally bringing the end to the ongoing transfer saga.

“It’s a done deal,” a source told Goal.com. “Hazard has made his choice and he will play for Chelsea next season.”

On Monday morning, the Belgian indicated that an announcement is imminent when he wrote on Twitter: "Good afternoon guys. I made up my mind. see you later. Thanks".

Chelsea are believed to have met the financial demands of Hazard and his agent, and also influenced his decision with the offer of a regular first team starting spot - something that would not have been a guarantee at City.

The Blues stepped up their pursuit of one of Europe’s hottest talents following their triumph in the Champions League final, which guaranteed they will feature in Europe’s elite competition next season.

Hazard admitted after his final game for Lille that Chelsea’s astonishing triumph in Munich had forced him to reconsider his future, having previously been set on joining Roberto Mancini's Premier League champions.

“Chelsea could interest me now,” Hazard said. “They've won the Champions League and will therefore be in it next season. It's really important for me to be playing in that competition.

"Chelsea are a big club with some great players – of course it's a possibility.”

United and City had long been considered to be in a two-horse race for Hazard, but both clubs were believed to be concerned by the financial demands of the player's agent, who is understood to want £5 million for his part in any deal.

Hazard was City’s primary close season target - he attended the Manchester derby in late April as a guest of the club before being shown around houses in the area.

Chelsea's hijacking of the transfer, however, means Mancini has been dealt a chilling snub and Hazard is now set for a move to Chelsea, where Blues owner Roman Abramovich is ready to fund a regeneration of the squad over the summer.

The Ligue 1 player of the season is one of the most highly-rated talents in Europe and has been in stunning form, scoring 20 league goals and providing 22 assists.

LEGENDARY MANCHESTER UNITED NUMBER 7 JERSEY SET TO BE RESERVED FOR HAZARD

Following rumours of the Lille starlets meeting with Manchester united today and Michael Owen's departure from the club this summer leaving the legendary and most loved by fans jersey number 7 free, Sir Alex is said to have reserved the jersey for Eden Hazard if he successfully completes a deal with the club according to reports by the BBC radio today.
According to the BBC the jersey which has been worn by united legends like George Best,Willie Morgan, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham
Cristiano Ronaldo will suit the player who has been  described as the next big thing in the world of football by most football managers and pundits  around the world.
The Belgian talented starlet in an interview revealed he would complete a move to his new club by June 2.
The 21-year-old’s transfer is already lined up to be the blockbuster move of the summer and with England’s elite ready to roll out the red carpet to secure his services,
Manchester united executive chairman David Gill believes united can secure the services of the player only if the player wants to play for legacy and history and not only for money and also believes FIFA's financial fair play will surely prevent their city rivals from signing the player. meanwhile Manchester city has reportedly made a 35 bid for AC Milan star Thiago Silva who is keen on staying at the Milan club.

Eden Hazard Will Reportedly Join Red Devils

Lille forward Eden Hazard is reportedly headed to Manchester United, according to BBC Radio (via Mirror Football), in what would be a massive boost to the Red Devils' attack after a heartbreaking second-place finish in the Premier League this season.

BBC does not have a report on their website as of the writing of this article, but if the report is true, the Red Devils will have earned a major victory in the transfer market.

Premier League rivals Chelsea andManchester City also had interest in Hazard, according to the Daily Mail, but United were able to persuade him to make a move to Old Trafford.
Hazard gives manager Sir Alex Ferguson a winger with fantastic pace, strong dribbling skills and phenomenal goal-scoring ability.
With talented wingers such as Nani and Valencia already in the squad, United will have plenty of attacking firepower on the flanks going forward.
The 21-year-old Belgian finished second in France's Ligue 1 this season with 20 goals scored in league play. He was also a major reason why Lille finished third in the league table and secured Champions League football for next season.
During his Lille career, Hazard has proven that he has the talent to excel in the Premier League, which is arguably the most difficult and competitive football league in all of Europe.
If Hazard joins United, they could become the favorites to win the Premier League next season and would certainly be a force to be reckoned with in Champions League play.

Kagawa confirms meeting with Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Shinji Kagawa has confirmed that he met with Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson on a trip to Manchester before adding that it would be "good to play in the Premier League".

The 23-year-old has become hot property after his club's sporting director Michael Zorc revealed that the player has turned down a contract extension past his current deal, which expires in 2013, and Goal.com exclusively revealed that the Premier League club were targetting the Japanese star.

Kagawa's agent Thomas Kroth confirmed to Goal.com that the pair had flown to Manchester on Tuesday, before the Samurai Blue star returned to his homeland.

"I have not decided yet," Kagawa told reporters about his future following his meeting with the Red Devils manager, who watched him play in Saturday's 5-2 DFB-Pokal final victory over Bayern Munich.

Kagawa continued: "[Sir Alex] Ferguson gave me good words. Several clubs contacted me but I can not say which is the best.

"I want to choose the club where I can challenge. It would be good to play in the Premier League."

Meanwhile, Kagawa also spoke about leaving the German champions Dortmund who he said had provided great support from fans, coaches and team-mates alike.
"The supporters treat me as if I have been playing for some decade for them and I feel that they love me," he said.

"The coach, my team mates, everything was fantastic. The coach told me to come back when I want."

Kagawa was a key figure in Dortmund's title-winning season, scoring 17 goals and providing 13 assists in 42 matches in all competitions.
Meanwhile former South Korean captain and Manchester United midfielder Ji-Sung Park has stated that Shinji Kagawa, can "play well" should he join the Red Devils from Borussia Dortmund.
Park seems well aware of the reported interest in Kagawa from his club and stated that he would welcome the move.

"Kagawa already has experience in Europe and good quality," Park told reporters. "If he comes to United, I think he'll play well." After missing out on winning the league by way of goal difference to neighbours Manchester City, Park realises the past season has been a disappointing one but is keen to move on, whilst declaring his intention to see out the remainder of his career in Manchester.

"It was disappointing season but past is past, I'll focus on what to do from now on," Park added.

"It's true that I want to retire at United, but it does not depend on me.

"Season is over now; I just want to take a rest not thinking about anything."

Hazard confirms Manchester move,Kagawa Flies in to Manchester united

14/5/2012: Sir Alex's presence at the German Cup final has led to three Borussia Dortmund stars being linked
with United in Bild. Interest in Shinji Kagawa has been well documented but Robert Lewandowski, who hit a hat-trick in the 5-2 battering of Bayern Munich, and highly-rated defender Mats Hummels are also potential targets. "Dortmund's offer is not good enough," said Lewandowski's agent Maik Barthel. "I can confirm that United are interested." It's also reported that Hummels' father was invited to Manchester recently but Dortmund will only entertain the thought of Kagawa, who has a year left on his contract, leaving. meanwhile the Japanese midfielder is reported to have flown to Manchester to complete talks with  Manchester united for a possible move to Old Trafford.

The Belgium international has already announced that he will be leaving his French employers at the end of the season to move to the Premier League. Manchester has emerged as his most likely destination but Hazard has thus far remained coy on whether he will taking up residence at Old Trafford at Eastlands

The 21-year-old had an opportunity to reveal all after being named as Ligue 1's player of the season on Monday evening, but when asked where he was going this summer, Hazard replied: "To Manchester, as I have already said. The decision will be taken soon.

"I have made my choice 90 per cent. There are always small things that can change everything. You will soon know where my future lies.

"City have won the title this year, and they have great players, a great coach and a nice project.

"At United, we all know [Sir Alex] Ferguson and all the talented players he has in his squad."

Goal.com has already reported that newly-crowned Premier League champions City lead the chase for the €40 million-rated versatile winger.

Hazard, who has scored 17 goals in Ligue 1 this season, and created 15 more, has spent his entire professional career at Lille, having arrived in France from Belgian outfit Tubize as a 14-year-old.
However Sir Alex Ferguson is reported to have been given a whooping £100 to spend in this summer's transfer to remain on top as the English giants.

$10 Million Is No Money: Kennedy Agyapong

In Ghana, making a million dollars legally is difficult but keeping a million dollars after it has been made and adding several more million dollars to it is even more difficult.
One man who has achieved both feats is Kennedy Agyapong, the famous and well-to-do Member of Parliament for Assin Fosu.
Kennedy Okumpreku Ohene Agyapong is his full name. He turns 52 this June and has money enough to burn.
He has an amount of money so enviable that his political rivals have publicly accused him of being an international drug baron- an allegation that has not been backed with a single shred of evidence and one that Kennedy has always denied.
Kennedy was on the Delay TV show last Saturday and when the host, Delores Frimpong Manso asked if he was worth $10 Million, he laughed, describing the figure as peanuts.
“Ten Million dollars is no money” were his exact words. This does not come as a surprise because when Kennedy commissioned his ultra-modern cold store at Tema recently, the facility was valued at some $6 million.
He is also the Chief Executive of Ken City Media, a company that owns Net 2 Television station, Oman FM, Ash FM and Spice FM. Kennedy owns the Hollywood Shopping Center, the Supercare Group of Companies and has shares in Assin Farms and several other investments.
Speaking on the Delay TV show, Kennedy said he made his first million dollars before age 30 but actually started to make ‘good’ money in 1997 when he helped facilitate travelling arrangements for some 557 persons and charged each of them an amount of $5,000.
On what he considers as the secret of making money, Kennedy said in his view, one could make money through luck, having a savings culture and by being at the right place at the right time.
When asked if God did not have a role to play in making money, Kennedy said God definitely had a role to play and that the God factor in making money was what some people could luck.
Answering a question on whether he would go to heaven when he died, Kennedy paused for a rather long time and said he would go to heaven if going to heaven was determined by good deeds.
NEWS-ONE’s checks revealed that some three years ago, Kennedy had over 40 houses, including mansions, belonging to him.  It is not clear how many houses he has currently but persons close to him estimate them to be around 50.
He is married and has just a little over a dozen children.
He has a fleet of expensive cars he badly maintains. His latest cars include a Mercedes Benz X-550, a new Lincoln Navigator and his custom-made Rolls-Royce that has his names and initials embossed on the leather seat covers.
Kennedy said though he had no regrets buying his Rolls-Royce, he was not sure if it was worth it because it has attracted a lot of enmity and envy for him and that he got sad when people looked at him cynically when they saw him cruising in it.
Kennedy disclosed that after completing Adisadel College, he continued to the Fordham University in New York but left school in level 300 because he had a passion to chase money and had never looked back but rather mastered the art of becoming a magnate.
The interview continues on the Delay TV show on TV3 Saturday afternoon.

“Actors in Nollywood should pray against death of a male member of the industry,” Prophet TB Joshua warned.
The Nigerian film industry witnessed a series of death last year. Ashley Nwosu, Sam Loco Efe, Geraldine Ekeocha and others all died last.
This year has already witnessed the death of David Ihieze and James Iroha, popularly called Gringory.

READ THIS ARTICLE AND YOU WILL GET TO KNOW MTN ARE CHEATS, LIARS AND THIEVES (MTN OPERATIONS REVEALED)

Over the years most MTN subscribers have been wondering why they are still on Ghana’s MOST TROUBLESOME NETWORK despite the list of worries they have been going through from expensive call rates, termination rates, poor network quality to unfavorable promotions and on it goes.
Just for the fact that MTN has the largest subscribtion in the country, having a speculated 10.2million customers to cheat, lie and steal from every now and then, they feel it’s enough to keep them up and running.
MTN has over the years been under fire in some countries like South Africa (SA) and Iran forcing them to change their call charges giving the customers good value for their money. So the question we ask ourselves is why cant this happen in Ghana. In SA the Termination rate thus the off-net call charge from MTN to VODACOM was at R1.25 thus a whooping 29pesewas which was very expensive and upon several complains and appeals to the telecom commission by way of law suits reduced to R0.70 thus 16pesewas which is set to reduce further to R0.44 thus 10p in the next few months. Note: these are call charges from MTN to other networks in South Africa.
IN Ghana, it looks very difficult for MTN customers to know how much they are charged per min for each call they make due the complicated nature of MTN call plans.MTN launched the MTN zone in June 2008 and promised customers call charges as low as 1.5pesewas on all MTN to MTN calls. Is this really true? The MTN zone now looks to be fixed at 9pesewas per min everywhere you go and so that’s the MTN call charge for on-net calls, the most expensive charges in the country now. For the termination rate thus MTN to other networks no one knows because they never talk about it. Not in their TV commercials or even on their official website. Oops! Guess you haven’t checked!
MTN recently introduced the Free beyond 3 offer promising customers no extra charge after paying for the first 3 minutes and can talk as long as you can but now looks like a means of manipulating customers and cheating them of their valued money. WHY?
1.       1. When subscribed to this call plan, you make a call and just after five minutes you are automatically hanged up just to restart your call again and then have to pay for another first 3 minutes only to talk not more than 5 minutes again. This is simply cheating.
2.       2. Customers subscribed to this call plan are been charged more than usual for the first 3 minutes and the MTN zone do not apply to this calls as well.
3.      3.  Customers on this plan no longer enjoy reduced Night calls but pay for the normal daylight expensive charges during the night whiles other network users enjoy off-peak charges and is even free for some networks like Expresso.
On promotions and offers, MTN stands as the worst amongst all the Telco providers in the country. Tigo at a point was offering customers  triple the amount of credit you buy and Vodafone on the double your credit promotion MTN only give as low as 0.8% back on every GHC1 worth of credit you use which for me is simply unattractive.
I tried comparing MTN charges to that of the three other Telco providers and I really felt the time to keep MTN under intense pressure was now or never.
MTN TO AIRTEL: Airtel has the cheapest termination rate thus off-net call charges of 8pesewas per min in the country now, which is twice as MTN charges at 16pesewas per minute and so one would have realized that making a call from MTN to AIRTEL seems very difficult and comes along with network difficulties. WHY?
CEO of MTN Mr. Michael lkpoki recently announced that MTN now pays more on “MTR” Mobile Termination Rate to other networks than they gain from them. And so the only reason for most Termination calls (calls from MTN to other networks) not easily reachable is a simple fact, just a means to curb the situation of paying more to these other Telco providers. So is this Marketing Strategy really fair enough for the innocent Ghanaian Mobile user.
MTN TO VODAFONE: Vodafone recently launched the “138” promotion which is set to give its customers good value for their money. The promotion gives customers as low as 11pesewas for off-net calls and 9pesewas for on-net calls with customers having to pay only 3pesewas for on-net calls from 9pm to 11pm and 5am to 7am everyday and all day on weekends. Vodafone also has other call plans like the 5050 which allows customers free on-net calls for seven days for only GHC2.49. So cant the network with the most customers in the country do same.
MTN TO TIGO: CEO of TIGO Carlos Caceres recently announced that Tigo felt the many call plans from mobile networks in Ghana was complicated to the many Ghanaians and so to make it so simple for their customers, Tigo has introduced a new flat call charges which will surpass all other Tigo call plans. The new plan would charge users the lowest rate on on-net calls in the country at just 4pesewas per min and 9pesewas on off-net calls.
And so comparing these call plans to that of MTN, I ask myself why they have 10.2million customers. Do Ghanaians feel committed in some way to MTN or what? For me it’s simply a mystery.
MTN’s social responsibility despite having the most subscribers hasn’t been the greatest compared to that of AIRTEL and VODAFONE, with Airtel’s touching lives and Vodafone’s Health line, livelihoods have been changed across the country. We can give credit to MTN for the Maternity block at KORLE-BU but is it really enough.MTN built a speculated GHC42, 000 ICT center across the country and the question is are they really in use. When travelling from Kumasi to Bibiani one will find about two of these centers which have never opened since it was built almost some two years ago.
We have over the years been subject to MTN’s Cheats and Lies, we always here complains from almost every user we meet either from poor network quality to exorbitant charges but the time to act for a change should be now.
Ghanaians are family oriented and always want to stay in touch with family and friends through phone calls and so paying so much to keep in touch turns to be a burden on the average Ghanaian.
U can only do one thing to support this initiative, like this article and share with friend to increase the circulation and be part of this change.MTN do not deserve the kind of support and respect given them by the majority Ghanaians. join this blog now and be part of the change!
